Doghair Finished Instruments
Doghair finish is a beautiful way to present an all mahogany instrument whether it be an acoustic guitar, electric guitar or ukulele. It is a unique process that Collings Guitars has mastered to bring out another side of mahogany. These instruments are challenging to photograph; to really see the depth of lustre, grain, and feel of the wood it is something you'll want to see in person. For this process, a reverse color fill is used for the grain to pop out the depth of the grain. Usually black or dark brown is used to fill the grain openings in mahogany prior to staining and applying the finish so the surface is smooth. With the dog hair, a lighter fill like gold or white is used and then the wood is stained darker creating a mesmerizing finish that captivates the eye.
This Collings OO1 all mahogany custom is one of the best things to happen to fingerstyle guitar since sliced bread. The pyramid bridge keeps it really open and responsive, and Collings' golden doghair finish is just astounding.
