We carry as many of the in-print tune books as are published today, including many imports. If you are looking for a particular tune, please contact us and we will search in our the books for you. Sometimes book prices increase; I do my best to keep up with the increases but with so many books on the site, I am apt to miss a re-pricing from a distributor. So I may have to charge you a few dollars more than our listed price- but only if the price has gone up for us! Thanks for your patience in this matter.

This is an incredible book- not too big but full of really important content for the beginning aspiring bluegrass, old-timey or folk musician.
- All Star Bluegrass Jam Along $19.95
- Darol Anger
- This unique series of books was designed to teach aspiring pickers twenty one of the most widely known songs and instrumentals in the bluegrass repertoire. There are books and CD's for each instrument- guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and bass, so that all band members can learn their parts. On the CD, the backup band plays the chord changes to each tune several times through at a slow to moderate tempo. The lead solist plays his version of the basic melody, so you can learn it in its most elemental form. The second time he plays it in a slightly more adventurous way, to give you an idea as to where the tune can be taken in an imporvised solo. As the band plays, the soloist drops out for several choruses, so you can be the soloist with the back up band behind you for a fun and productive practice session.
The book provides you with printed notation and/or tablature so lthat you can learn to play intros, endings and both solos in note-for-note detail. You won't find a better way to learn important tunes and improve your instruments technique!!! Tunes include Blackberry Blossom, Sally Ann, Down in the Willow Garden, In the Pines and many other standards.

- A'Chording to the Tunes-video $29.95
- Tracy Dares
- This is the only traditional piano instructional vidoe that I am aware of. It begins with a solo performance by Tracy followed by instruction for piano accompaniment to a jig, a march, a strathspey, and a reel. For the intermediate piano student interested in the Cape Breton accompaniment style, this lesson highlights some of the technical elements of the style and provides the student with a mini-repetoire. Knowledge of chords is essential to use this. Comes with small booklet with the written music and accompaniment suggestions.
- Alexander Walker: A Collection of Fiddle Tunes $16.95
- Alexander Walker
- First issued in 1866, Paul Cranford has acted both as editor and arranger in republishing these tunes, many of which are now popular in the Cape Breton repetoire. According to Paul,"If I felt it was possible to improve a tune I have done so. Some of these new arrangements contain ideas heard from Cape Breton performers, but because I had to make compromises in order to present what I felt was the best from all sources, I take full responsibility for these new arrangements. If a few Walker tunes get back into circulation because ofmy efforts then they will have been worth while."
Clear, easy to read notation, as are all of Paul Cranford's publications which have been re-released and made widely available in the States from Mel Bay.
- Brenda Stubbert: The Second Collection $17.95
- Brenda Stubbert
- While we patiently await the revision of the now out-of-print "Brenda Stubbert's Collection of Fiddle Tunes", we are delighted with a second collection of Brenda's tunes. iIt looks like about half are by Brenda and the other half are either traditional or recent compositions by other modern composers. She now has five CD's; this new book documents many of the tunes found on those recordings and at the same time gives a snapshot of the music currently in her repertoire. For the most part, the tunes are transcribed from the recordings. Chords were arranged with Brenda by my friend and wonderful piano player Melissa Emmons. A really great book! I also have a few of her latest CD "Music All Round" for sale for $12. (I got them to go with the book but they are not packaged together).
- Brenda Stubbert's Collection of Fiddle Tunes $19.95

- Lighthouse Collection of Newly Composed Fiddle Tunes with CD $19.95
- by Paul Cranford
- Mostly new tunes by Paul Cranford in the Cape Breton tradition, with a smattering of traditional tunes and tunes common in today's repertoire by other Cape Breton fiddlers. Mary Jesse Gillis march is a winner. One of my favorite marches is in this collection- a D tune called Fenella. Truly gorgeous!
- Natalie MacMaster's Cape Breton Island Fiddle $14.95
- Transcribed by Stacie Phillips
- Transcriptions from three of Natalie's albums,"A Compilation," "Fit as a Fiddle," and "No Boundaries." This book works best by far with careful listening to the albums. There are important, but subtle details such as mini-accents, to even violent dynamic swings, explosive bow attacks, and changes in phrasing of what are notated as eighth notes, that have been omitted. If included, the music would be too dense to read with any ease!

- First published in 1981 and reissued in 1997, this heartwarming collection of biographies of the best 100 Cape Breton fiddlers is a must have for all Cape Breton fiddlers. It has a few tunes and some mention of technique, but the real value of the book is its thoughtful insights into Cape Breton life and culture.
- The Cape Breton Fiddler's Collection $19.95
- Paul Cranford
- The latest additon to Paul Carnford's wonderful collection of Cape Breton tune books. Published as a tribute to the Cape Breton Fiddler's Association, most of the tunes were submitted, suggested or composed by past of present members. Others have been arranged from their repertoires. - English Pub Session Tunes $17.00
- Dave Mallinson
- Dave is now doing for the English fiddle tradition what he did for the Irish-though how many of the tunes are originally English I'm not sure as with a quick glance through there are decidedly French Canadian, Irish, American and tunes from the Howe collection. It is nice that he features several sections of easy tunes and then ends with tunes that are "A bit of a Challenge"!
- Lincolnshire Collections Volume 1 $18.95
- Joshua Gibblns
- Tunes from a variety of sources, collected in Tealby, Lincolnshire (England) between 1823 and 1826 by Joshua Gibbons, a papermaker and fiddler. The original manuscript, a note book with dozens of tunes crammed into it as they were notated by Mr. Gibbons when he either learned or discovered them was donated to a museum in Scunthorpe and "discovered" by a local musician. This collection of 186 tunes has been edited and many of the tunes have been transposed to the fiddle-friendly keys of G and D rather than B flat and F and C. It is an unusual collection in that it contains 30 tunes harmonised for two or three instruments, either for Church Band or Village Band or a marching band connected with local volunteers or militia. Fascinating! Add this one to your collection!
- Mally's Cotswold morris Book Vol. 1 $20.95 with CD.
- Dave Mallinson
- This collection of morris music, although by no means comprehensive, contains most of the dance tunes currently in vogue in what might be called the popular (British) traditions. All of the tunes can be found elsewhere, but, unlike previous publications, they are all presented in keys which most of today's morris musicians are likely to favor. Ie the Key of G. (to accommodate the melodeans, by inlarge. ) So don't buy this book for fiddle unless you're going to be playing for a team. Chord accompaniments indicated.

- An excellent instruction book and not just for children. In fact I really wouldn't recomment this for children; this is a very adult book. You can put brown paper over the cover title and picture if it embarasses you. No phisical is technique is included; the value of this book are the additions, improvisations and ornaments that follow each tune. Fiddling is very much improvisational and I wish I could do more alone those lines! CD or DVD is available to go with.

- The Violinist's Guide to Fiddling $14.95
- Mark Weeg
- This book is meant for classical violinists and advanced fiddlers. It includes "difficult" tunes or more complicated versions of standard tunes, notated from real life performances. Traditional bowing and chord patterns commonly used by fiddlers are explored for the benefit of the classical player. Chords are included. Solo variations and or back-up harmonies are included for many of the tunes. Traditions cover the gamut, from Irish to Cape Breton to Bluegrass to Old-Timey. Partucilarly challenging for the average fiddler (like me) would be Parazotti's E flat tune, "The Banks". A popular tune in the Scottish and Cape Breton repetoire, I would recommend it as a particularly exciting and delightful piece!

- Complete with fingering, left-hand notation and chord symbols.
- 300 Fiddle Tunes $9.95
- Ed. Ron Middlebrook
- Reels, Jigs, Hornpipes and Dances from New England, Irish and Scottish traditions. Nicely notated on the page, not too small!!!
- 50 Tunes for Fiddle $29.95 with 3 CD's
- Mark Geslison
- This book contains just over 50 tunes from the US, the British Isles, and Canada. It is intended to give a broad tune base of popular fiddle tunes to students and instructors. Many of the tunes come with a second and/of third fiddle part. Chords are included, with a chord chart for the tunes in the back. The CDs contain all the tunes; listening is the best way to absorb the rhythm and cadences of the music. Always keep in mind that what is written in any of these collections is the bare-bones out-line of a tune. It is up to the fiddler to understand the nuances of the tradition, and what bowings and ornaments and timings are used to really makek the tune sound authentic!
I would describe this volume, for both the way it is layed out and the content, to be a "violinistic" approach to the music, and would be best enjoyed in a class room setting where a violin teacher is exposing the students to traditional music.

- Carol Ann's Collection of Fiddle Tunes $22.95 with CD
- Carol Ann Wheeler
- Fully titled "Carol Ann's Collection of Fiddle Tunes for Shows, Contests, and Parking Lot Jamming!", this book contains an interesting selection of Scottish and Texas style tunes, often arranged in sets. Some optional harmony parts are also included and all the tunes are on the CD. Very interesting chat text before each number and well as a large collection of great photographs of mainly Western and Texas fiddlers. When I was at the Montana State Fiddle Contest in 1982, I met a Montana fiddler whose name of course I couldn't recall, but I did remember that he was a mortitian. So imagine my surprise when his photo turns up in this book- his name is Gary Beebe! Aslo photos of the younger new fiddlers, Hanneke Cassel and Laura Risk, as well as a shot of Buddy MacMaster in plaid shorts with Alaisdar Fraser in a kilt.Chords, bowings, double stops and ornaments are detailed here. This is a really interesting fiddle tune book- I like it a whole bunch- but the arrangements are definitely not for beginners or low intermediates! Worth the price for the photos alson!

The Great Waltz gave all the members the opportunity to share the common love of the violin, viola and cello, and have produced a CD and book combination of the waltzes they played during their 2001 tour. Most tunes have either harmony violin or cello or viola parts, as well as the 1st violin. Accompaniment chords are indicated. Sources for the tunes include "The First Book of Cotillions", "The English Dancing Master" and "Apollo's Banquet for the Treble Violin": sources for songs are "Southern Harmony" and "Wyeth's Repository". (Aren't these wonderful names!)The authors encourage experimentation in arrangement and in instrumentation -at the time these tunes were written, musicians played whatever was at hand. A lovely, unusual and recommended collection!

- Easy Fiddle Solos $10.95 with CD
- Dick Weissman and Mike Connolly
- The author states "with this book, I hope to give the beginning fiddler and immediate grasp of the fundamentals of fiddling in an instructive and entertaining way. It is assumed that the reader has a basic knowledge of reading music and can play in te several keys in the first position. Tablature (unnecessary and inadvisable for the fiddle in my personal opinion) and standard notation are included as well as chord symbols. While it looks to me like most of the tunes are compositions by the authors, the excercises that they incorporate are excellent and progressive. They include bowing and rhythm patterns, shuffles and tags with a whole page of standard tags at the end!
- Easy Peasy Tunes $10.95
- Ed. Dave Mallinson
- 101 tunes for absolute beginners and novices, graded as to difficulty. Suitable for all instruments, with chords. Nice to have a nice beginner's book!

- Favorite American Polkas and Jigs for Fiddle $12.95
- Stacy Phillips
- Commonly played tunes; all these versions are taken directly from the playing of well established fiddlers. The fiddler whose version is transcribed herein is indicated next to the title. Chords are included; type is clear and easy to read. There aren't many collections that include polkas, so this is a welcome source. Includes loads of the wonderful Old-Fart polkas like Jennie Lind, Clarinet, and Beer Barrel!
- Favorite American Waltzes for Fiddle $12.95
- Stacy Phillips
- This collection is comprised of transcriptions of traditional American waltzes played by well known fiddlers. There are very few duplications of tunes in the Bill Matheson Waltz Books; these in Stacy's book are generally really traditional waltzes played in the 20's and 30's when fiddlers were first starting to play lots of waltz tunes. They have withstood the test of time! Chords included. A good book to add to the collection of a fiddler who loves to play waltzes! Includes old classics like Over the Waves, Put your Little Foot, Kiss Me Again, and Peek-a-boo. !!!

- Fiddling Across America $25.00 with CD
- David Reiner and Peter Anick
- Featuring 66 transcriptions from fiddlers across the spectrum of American styles. A truly fascinating book notes on each fiddler and photos of many of them. We got Northeast, Southeast, Western and Ethnic catogories with bowings and some chord indications. Great and thorough introductory section on cultural history and traditions and technical playing. Most of the fiddlers represented are the "real thing" rather than revival musicians. There is a hugh amount of good information in this book as well as the tunes. As these are transcriptions, there are lots of technicalities, so this is not a volume for beginners. I would surmise that the tunes on the CD are played by the authors rather than by the original artists, but I don't know for sure. Anyone out there know?
- Fiddling Around the World $22.95 with CD
- Mary Ann Harbor
- This eclectic sampling of popular ethnic music is largely accessible to the intermediate student. - Ed. Stacy Phillips and Mark O'Connor
- This is a fine collection of transcriptions of Mark's contest tunes from 1975-1984, the years during which he redefined Texas fiddling and set a new standard in traditional old-time contest competition. The tunes are from his album "Mark O'Connor-The Championship Years, and the book starts out with a detailed conversation between Mark and Stacy about Mark's career and ends with an interview with Mark and Matt Glaser, with other fascinating interviews sprinkled throughout the book. Chords are charted at the end of each tune. Some cool photos too.

Presentation of scales and arpeggios include excellent fingerings and an emphasis on bowing and rhythmis variations. Beginngers are supported with rote and music notation as well as specific goals to accomplish. One special feature is an intense focus on the development of the intermediate player through two-octave scales, arpeggios and chord progression arpeggios. Advanced players will be challenged by three-octave major and minor scales presented in increasing rhythmic values. Finally, scales in sixths and thirds are offered for continued study and development of double stops. Well written, well presented, and highly recommended!

- Celtic Back-Up for all Instrumentalists $22.95 with CD

An introductory section with explanations is valuable, as are the simplified alternatives to Irish fiddle ornamentation. Nice discography and bibliography in the back with CD for Aural Reference. I recommend this book!

- Lisle Crowley

- The Irish DADGAD Guitar Book $19.95
- Sarah McQuaid
-
- Traditional Irish Guitar $34.90 with CD
- Paul de Grae
- I like this book a lot. The author is very generous with the text, both in giving explanations of what he is teaching and in the nature and origins of the tune. It is a single note rather than a fingerstyle or classical (with more than one string sounded at a time) approach to playing traditional tunes on the guitar. There is some tab, but many of the pieces are in notation only so the ability to read music would be helpful. Full of advice on alternative tunings, chord substitutions, technique, accompaniment, solo playing, I would recommend this book highly, both as a tutor and as a source of music an information.

It includes good versions of popular session tunes with good accompanying text. Well done and highly recommended.
- Irish Fiddle Solos $19.95 with CD
- Pete Cooper
- This collection follows a journey, county by county from the South to the North of Ireland. Leading exponents of each regional style are acknowledged in the short texts about the tunes. Tunes are presented both in the book and on the recording in sets, rather than individually. This accords with traditional performance where tunes are grouped for both informal playing sessions and at ceilidh dances. A set usually consists of two of more tunes of the same type (jigs or reels), each tune being played three times before changing to the next. An excellent section on bowing and ornamentation is included at the beginning of the book, with exmaples from selected tunes. Fabulous documentation on each set of tunes. Interestingly enough all the text is written in English, French, and German. And an extra bonus- a county map of Ireland so you know where you are! Chords included too.

Besides the jigs and reels, more unusual tyne types such as a large O'Carolan section, and polkas, flings, slides, airs and folksongs(without words) are included. This is as thorough and well arranged and easily readable book as I've seen - highly recommended.
- Irish Session Tune Book $17.95
- By Cari Fuchs
- 300 tunes collected while playing at Irish tune sessions.
- Irish Session Tunes-The Blue Book $14.95
- Ed. Brid Cranitch
- This is a unique collection of Irish session tunes in that the tunes are arranged in sets, in the order that they would be played in a live situation. This is the only book I know of that is arranged this way, and therefore is quite valuable to musicians. Brid says" The tunes that make up each set vary from region to region and are also dependent on the instruments being played. What's more tunes go in and out of fashion; then there are the 'classics' which are heard in session no matter where you are, for example 'Cooleys" and 'The Wise Maid'. This collection of session tunes is by no means definitive, but is based on the many sessions I have listened to and played in.

- Irish Session Tunes-The Orange Book $14.95
- Brid Cranitch
- Irish session tunes in sets, selected by Brid Cranitch. This collection of session tunes sets is made up of 2 or 3 tunes per set. Like "The Blue Book" it works best when you learn the tunes in order of how they are traditionally played in an Irish session. This second collection contains more reels than the previous one. This is because you, the learner, are improving all the time so you can better handle the reels! An optional CD is available upon request.
- Irish Session Tunes-The Red Book $14.95
- Ed. Matt Cranitch
- This collection of 100 tunes contains a vaired selection, some of which are popular and widely played, others not as well-known. The different dance rhythms-double jigs, slip jigs, slides, plokas, reels, hornpipes and set dances-are included. Traditional music is subject to continuous change and variation as it is passed from one player to another, so there is no exact version of any tune. Those given herein may be considered 'fiddle versions', in that they are suited to this particular instrument. However, they are also suitable for other instruments, though it may be necessary to modify the tunes slightly so that the notes fall within the range of the instruments. Again, this series is neatly written and clearly laid out.

The first full tune doesn't come for 28 pages and this is a good thing, with all you need to learn before you start! An interesting selection of tunes from the Old-Time and Irish traditions are arranged in order of key signature and difficulty. Extensive discography. Or you could just move to Boston and get lessons from Alan.

- Marshall's Scottish Melodies $13.00
- Brought to us by Randy Miller and Jack Perron
- Compiled from four volumes published separately in the 19th Century by various houses. At the time of publication of the present volume, earnest and diligent effort was being made to contact the surviving heirs of William Marshall, for the purpose of general coorespondence and other gratuities. In the event no heirs are forthcoming, an appropriate doantion (from the proceeds of this book , if any) will be made to a suitable organization dedicated to Scottish Traditional Music.
My only complaint about the book is that since it has been reduced to a 6X8 format (with spiral binding) the print is quite small, making it especially difficult for those of us over 40 (+ or-) who have trouble reading the fine print! However, this is the only place that these grand tunes are available, so as my old dad use to say you pays your money and you makes your choice!

- Scottish Encyclopedia $19.95
- Bonnie Rideout
- The title of this book may be misleading. While the word "encyclopedic" refers to a collection of works or information that is extensive and thorough, this book is neither. It is a collection of tunes compiled from thirty five years of work by one fiddler, Bonnie Rideout. It is essentially her repertoire from recordings, sessions and classrooms. As a part of the Mel Bay Encyclopedia series it was put together to offer fiddlers direct access to the gems that she plays. The tunes are listed by key signature, as they are in Paul Crandford's publications from Jerry Holland and Brenda Stubbert, however Bonnie's book does not contain accompanying chords. It is full of Skinner, Gow and Marshall tunes, and a few of her originals as well as unattributable traditional Scots reels, strathspeys and jigs. At least a hundred tunes, I would highly recommend this easily readable volume to anyone playing Scots or Cape Breton Fiddle. A great addition to the library indeed!
- Scottish Fiddlers' Session Tune Book $$22.95
- Compiled and arranged by Christine Martin and Anne Hughes
- The compilers state:"In compiling this collection we have tried to reflect the current repetoire of 'sessions' in Scotland. No one book can represent a complete repetoire, and indeed this varies from area to area, but in this volume we have gathered a great collection includes the popular tunes of today which should stand the test of time. Some of the material included is fairly tricky and should offer a challenge to the increasing numbers of excellent fiddlers." Published in 1999.

- This collection of Scottish Highland fiddle tunes represents some of the most popular music played in Scotland today and can be heard on many recordings of the most popular Folk, Dance and Pipe bands. - The Scottish Ceilidh Collection for Fiddlers $18.95
- Compiled and Arranged by Christine Martin and Anne Hughes
- The SCCFF is a lively collection of tunes for dancing taken from the popular music played by traditional musicians all over Scotland. These are some of the popular dances and songs one would hear at a Scottish ceilidh. This is one of a series published by Taigh Na Teud on the Isle of Skye; the others include "The Scottish Folk Fiddle-Third Position", "The Scottish Fiddler's Session Tune Book", "Fiddle Music of the Scottish Highlands", and "The Scottish Folk Fiddle Tutor", all of which are desribed in this list.
The reason I mention these all together is that not only do they contain wonderful tunes and are layed out in one of the nicest fashions I've seen, but all contain detailed bowing instruction. Now bowing is both dependent on the individual fiddler and the style he or she is playing, so many tunes that are played across traditions will be bowed differently depending on whether one plays Irish, Scottish or American Old-Timey. Bowing is not generally learned from written music, because bowing is usually not discussed in most tunebooks. So to find a series of tune books with careful bowing indications is a great treasure that I wanted to let you all know about.

- Traditional Scottish Fiddling $22.95 with CD
- Ed. Christine Martin
- This is one great book Over 220 tunes and tons of technique. Almost every tune has some notation concerning history or demonstrates a particular bowing or ornamentation. It also identifies, both with tunes and technique, some of the particular features of West Coast, East Coast, Orkney, Borders, and Shetland styles. 68 CD tracks recorded by the appropriate fiddler represent each of the regional styles, albeit putting so many tunes on one CD limits their length to one turn through! This book has more technical detail in it than any other book that I've seen. At the same time it is clearly written, notated and easy to understand. A treasure but definitely not for the uninitiated!!!
